I've always dreamed of spending a summer in a lookout tower. My romanticized version includes friends visiting for dinner parties and long hikes in the mountains. In reality it would probably involve a lot of boredom, solitude and Lipton noodles for dinner. Not to mention the fact that you're usually a 14 mile hike from a shower. Right now the Selway-Bitterroot foundation is
looking for volunteers to man St. Mary's lookout this summer. Too bad all my vacation time is already planned out, because that sounds like an awesome opportunity.
Maybe one day I can have my own fire tower, complete with a fully stocked kitchen and indoor plumbing, and of course those amazing 360 degree views.
Check out this
amazing cabin that was built in a fire tower style.

Here's another
fire tower cabin. This one was remodeled from an original functioning tower in what looks like Whitefish. I guess I'm in the right state if this is what I think of when I picture my dream home.

I love the Pendleton wool blanket -- their
Glacier Park design, natch.
One of these days I need to rent one from the
Forest Service for a long weekend so I can get my fix.
